The IFB Beat 2-16 Edition

A Message from the Editor

February is Low Vision Awareness Month, and at IFB Solutions, we live that mission year-round. We are proud to create a workplace where employees who are blind or visually impaired have the tools, training and adaptive technology needed to succeed.

We’re also celebrating the exciting news that Senator Thom Tillis supported federal funding to expand and modernize our Winston-Salem campus—an investment in local jobs and our bright future as we mark 90 years of impact.

Be sure to welcome new hire Cliff Henderson, join us for the Feb. 17 general assembly, and read this week’s Employee Spotlight featuring Sharon Hairston. Thank you for all you do to make IFB thrive!

Quote of the week:

February is Low Vision Awareness Month

February is Low Vision Awareness Month—a reminder of the importance of creating workplaces where every individual can succeed. At IFB Solutions, we stand firmly beside this mission year-round by ensuring that employees with low vision have the tools, training and support they need to perform their jobs with confidence.

IFB strives to transform opportunities once considered “sighted-only” into meaningful jobs for our almost 200 employees who are blind or visually impaired. Through specialized low-vision aids and adaptive devices, employees can perform complex, high-skill responsibilities with accuracy and autonomy.

Behind each success story are the engineers and trainers who enjoy putting their thinking caps on to figure out how to convert a job using low-vision aids or devices such as 3D printed jigs, magnifiers, CC-TV’s, medal guides, contrasting tape and special lighting. They carefully consider how each device will support the employee, making sure it is the right fit for the individual and the role.

Headshot of Denesha Scales
Denesha Scales

“Seeing an employee confidently perform a task we’ve adapted—that’s the most rewarding part of our work,” says IFB Trainer Denesha Scales. “It’s not just about the technology; it’s about creating real opportunities for independence.”

Senator Thom Tillis Supports Improvement and Expansion in NC Manufacturing

IFB Solutions thanks NC Senator Thom Tillis for his efforts to secure federal funding for improving and expanding IFB’s manufacturing and warehousing facilities at our Winston-Salem campus. These federal funds will enable us to make much-needed updates so that we can sustain and grow local jobs in the future. These updates will focus on four main initiatives:

  1. Construction of a 25,000-square-foot expansion to our campus which will allow us to consolidate all of our Winston-Salem area production and warehousing in one location.
  2. Safety and traffic improvements on our campus for employees who use public transportation.
  3. Modernization of our warehousing and production space with the additional space necessary to pursue and capture growth in existing or new federal government contract opportunities.
  4. Better access to our campus for commercial freight.

Importantly, there is no immediate impact for our employees who work at our Winston-Salem or Clemmons facilities. Over the next several months, the IFB leadership team will begin work on the planning and design phase. We look forward to sharing a timeline once it is available.

This is an incredibly exciting time for all of us at IFB Solutions as we kick off our 90th anniversary and build toward a bright and productive future! Again, please join us in thanking Senator Tillis for his long-standing support of IFB Solutions and the AbilityOne program.

Welcome New Hire

We are excited to introduce Cliff Henderson who joined the BSC team on Feb. 9. We look forward to his contributions and success. Let’s be sure to give him a warm IFB welcome!
