YMCA Camp Hanes opportunity announcement!

IFB’s generous donor is again fully sponsoring kids of our employees to attend one week of the traditional residential camp at the YMCA Camp Hanes (camphanes.org) this summer! The Camp is located on four hundred acres at the base of the Sauratown Mountain in King just 30 minutes north of Winston-Salem. From archery to hiking, alpine wall to zip-lining, swimming to kayaking, your kids are sure to learn new skills and make lifelong friends in a safe environment. Eligibility Criteria:
Full or part-time IFB employees with children or grandchildren ages 6-15 are eligible. Must be past their 90 days of service OR IFB Solutions contract employees who have been working for IFB through one of our contract labor partners for at least 12 months. Campers must be 6 or be attending the 1st grade in the fall of 2022.

Submit the Camp registration form to Brent Burkholder by 12:00 PM Tuesday, May 10 (you can attach a copy of your submitted online application too). Please submit all applications to Brent via email at bburkholder@ifbsolutions.org or in his IFB mailbox located in the mailroom along with the following: 1) a one-page essay written by you as a parent about why you would like your child to join the YMCA Camp Hanes this summer, 2) a statement/short essay by your child answering a similar question: Why would you like to experience the YMCA Camp Hanes this summer? and 3) also we ask you an/or your child to be ready to craft a statement about the Camp experience if asked at the end of summer. Ask your supervisor for a paper version of the registration form.
Selection will be made on a first-come-first-served basis. Up to ten residential camp slots are available. IFB employees are also eligible for a Day Camp opportunity. All required documentation must be completed to be considered. IFB development and HR staff are available to assist employees who are blind with the application form if necessary. No transportation will be provided by IFB Solutions to bring your child to or from the Camp. The Camp scholarship winners will be selected by May 13. If your child or grandchild is not selected to be funded by the scholarship, they can still attend the Camp this summer at a 50% discounted rate. All IFB employees’ children are eligible for this discount.

Update on Steps to SEE:

We are thrilled that Steps to SEE Walkathon came to an exciting end! We are looking forward to the celebration at Field Day in Charlotte on May 14th when we will announce how many miles our S.E.E. students from across the state have walked! S.E.E. students, teachers, and parents have raised over $14,000 to send children who are blind to S.E.E. summer camps this summer. Sponsors and supporters of IFB have donated another $16,000. Be on the lookout for the final results and to find out which student has walked the furthest! Thank you to everyone who has supported our students!

The Winston-Salem chapter of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is hosting a membership drive on Monday, May 9 at 12:00 in TADS room. We are here to answer all your questions and help you get involved with an organization that believes in living the life you want!

Community Low Vision Center

CLVC Item of the Week:

Tactile Chess/$27.95 | Finally a Chess Set that is designed specifically with the Blind and Visually Impaired in mind! This attractive wooden chess board is completely tactile, including pegs on each plastic playing piece and holes in the wooden chess board which hold each piece in place on each square. For additional tactile recognition, each plastic piece is shaped differently; white pieces have a bump on top, and the dark squares on the board are raised to help track board colors. Spacefelt – A New Assistive Technology Innovation For People With Visual Impairment

I’m Vivian from Grailmaker Innovations. Our startup has developed Spacefelt, a tagging and labelling app for persons with visual impairment. Using it, the user can tag, label and identify objects around them independently. The idea of Spacefelt came up when my friend, Aishwarya, who is a visually impaired tactile artist wanted some technology that will help her identify colors:

 The WeWalk Smart Cane is now available in the US.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The WeWALK smart cane pairs an ultrasonic cane handle with an Ambutech graphite white cane to create a cane that can detect obstacles above chest height, in addition to those on the ground.  A free smartphone iOS or Android app can also be downloaded to provide additional guidance tools including guided navigation, points of interest exploration, and a public transit integration.  WeWALK is best used by people already familiar with white cane mobility skills.

Obstacle Detection

  • Detects anything above chest height, including lampposts, tree branches, truck mirrors, and street signs

  • Points of interest can be saved as a favorite destination, offer a phone number for dialing, connect to Uber for a ride to the location, or provide guided navigation to the destination

Public Transportation, via the app

  • Check arrival times for buses or trains in the area
  • View timetables for local transit
  • View and track all stops on a selected route
  • Receive notification when the destination is reached and it is time to exit

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

Not only is keeping your physical health in check important, keeping your mental health in check should also be a priority! On May 9th and May 18th during regular lunch hours, IFB Solutions is hosting the Mental Health Association of Forsyth County for Lunch and Learns! These will be 30 minute sessions, with food provided on the topic of “Importance of Self-Care/Building Resiliency”. There will be valuable information shared during these sessions, so we encourage you to sign up as there is limited availability!
